Up to 80,000 cranes savour the regional delicacies on their autumnal stop-over in our region. The first cranes can be observed in the end of August on harvested fields, then more and more cranes arrive. Until the end of October or beginning of November they are undisputed dominating the sky.
They return back from the south, depending on meteorological conditions, in February or March on their way to their hatcheries. The cranes pass the day on the harvested fields of the national park. They prefer cornfields, greens or worms. They sleep in the wind tidelands with shallow water and on treeless islands huddled and standing. One crane couple even remains in Dierhagen during summer. On the "Haughwiesen" in front of the Birkenallee you can observe the cranes while foraging for food.
