The amber town Ribnitz-Damgarten is situated in between the Hanseatic cities of Rostock and Stralsund, along the south bank of the Baltic Sea linked inner bay chain. Ribnitz-Damgarten is the entrance to our scenic coastal region.

Worth visiting is, amongst others, the German amber museum in the Poor Clares abbey. Besides enchanting incluses and amber artwork of the 16th and 17th century it offers modern amber adornments. |
The town and its rural districts are surrounded by a beautiful, diversified and colourful landscape with a striking originality.
In the north of the town begins the national park "Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft", on the western side lies the Ribnitzer Großes Moor and the Rostocker Heide and in the south the valley of the Recknitz. Being all under nature conservation, they are shelter and natural habitat for meanwhile infrequent plants and endangered animals.
And of course there is the Baltic Sea, reachable on a bycicle and hiking track, which runs aside of the road's noise from the district Langendamm directly alongside the Saaler inner bay to the Baltic Sea in Neuhaus. This is the reason why many visitors choose the amber town as starting point for their bycicle and hiking tours. Urban culture, rural idyll and pure nature are ideal preconditions for holidays in every season of the year.
Worth visiting is, amongst others, the German amber museum in the Poor Clares abbey. Besides enchanting incluses, amber artwork of the 16th and 17th century and modern amber adornments, visitors can shape their own ambers. Absolutely new in the exposition is the reproduction of a panel part of the lost amber room.
Minster and choir hall with medieval artwork, amongst others the famous "Ribnitzer Madonnen", the funerary monument of the abbess Ursula of Mecklenburg and the municipal historical exhibition, belong to the walkabout. In further buildings of the Poor Clares abbey you can find the gallery for contemporary art, the register office, the public library and the town's archive.
The Rostocker Tor (1250) and the town church St. Marien (13th/14th century) with the special reconstruction of the nave and the Jehmlich-organ are also worth visiting. You can climb the 55 metres tower and enjoy the wonderful view over the medieval town centre, the inner bay and the inner bay landscape up to the Baltic Sea and the valley of the Recknitz.
Do not miss the concerts of the Ribnitz organ summer.
The open-air museum Klockenhagen shows different rural living facilities and houses with fitments, agricultural equipment and regional pets. In the herb garden you can join competent guided tours.
There are also guided tours through the Ribnitzer Großes Moor and the Museum " Naturschatzkammer und Paradiesgarten" (natural treasury and paradise garden) in the town's forest of the district Neuheide.
A golf course is situated in the district Petersdorf, a bowling alley and the water park "Bodden-Therme" in the quarter of Ribnitz.
Both quarters have modern harbours with rest and mooring areas. Passenger liners run the routes to Dierhagen and Wustrow. Renting boats is also possible.
In the quarter of Damgarten a visit of the St. Bartholomäus church and the transparent factory of the Ostsee-Schmuck corporation in the eastern commercial zone is worthwhile. Here you get to know the most important steps for manufacturing and designing adornment. Within the German amber museum, in gallery E and at various goldsmithes in the town you can buy distinctive gold-, silver- and amber adornment.
The technical museum on the former airport area in the district Pütnitz shows old cars and motorbikes and a collection of old military technique.
